Lawrence sits on the Kansas River in the Northeastern corner of the state and is the county seat of Douglas County. The population is now just over 80,000 people. Lawrence is located in a rich grain-producing area and was founded in 1854. Lawrence was a noted center of abolitionist activities in the 1850s and a vital stop on the Underground Railroad, a network that helped escaped slaves reach Freedom. From Quantrill's Raid to the birth of Basketball, the history of Lawrence binds it's residents together.
Today Lawrence is a progressive community, rich in culture and thriving in the arts. It is home to not only The University of Kansas but Haskell Indian Nations University as well. Take a stroll down Mass Street and pass by sculptures, galleries, coffee shops, boutiques, jazz clubs, theaters, and more.
